Writer Wears Many Hats

Jun 25, 2012

She’s an award-winning writer of more than 20 books for children, many of which celebrate the African American experience. And Andrea Davis Pinkney credits her Girl Scout experience as the grounds for her success.

“When I was growing up in the Washington, D.C., area, my mother was the leader of my Girl Scout group,” she remembers. It was then that Andrea earned her Girl Scout Reader patch. “[My mom and I] were so proud of the accomplishment, and still are today,” she says.

“Girl Scouts offered the promise of adventure, making new friends, fun, exploring my passions, and discovering new hobbies,” Andrea continues. “Storytelling provides the same benefits—adventure, fun, friends, exploration, and discovery!”

Now living in Brooklyn, New York, Andrea is more than a successful author and former Girl Scout—she is an executive at Scholastic Publications, wife to her collaborator husband, and mother of two children.
