About the Trip

“It was a crazy experience to open your eyes to look within yourself and the world around you. Before I was stuck in my comfort zone and now I feel stronger and braver.”

-Annika, Girl Scout Alum

Sloths and monkeys galore! Spend your winter vacation navigating volcano trails, trekking through tropical rainforests, enjoying white sandy beaches, battling whitewater rapids, and growing your leadership skills and knowledge in Costa Rica!

This course is perfect for Girl Scouts looking to explore new cultures and ecosystems, challenge themselves on thrilling trekking expeditions, spot sloths and other tropical wildlife, and create lifelong friendships along the way. Perfect your map and compass navigation skills, and earn 2-5 hours of environmental community service.

Beaches & Tropical Trails

First, head to the world-famous Manuel Antonio Pacific Coast beaches to catch waves, enjoy the sun, and explore park trails teeming with wildlife. When you aren’t beachside body surfing or boogie boarding, you will be snorkeling with colorful tropical fish, exploring hidden waterfalls and spotting exotic wildlife like sloths, monkeys, coatimundis, and scarlet macaws along the way! In addition, lend a hand on one or more service projects based on the current need of the community. These projects often include: planting native trees, beach cleanups, intercultural games with school children, and light maintenance of local schools.

Volcano Trek
Return inland to our rainforest base to explore both hidden trails and well-trodden routes as you learn or perfect your map and compass navigation skills. Head out on your first expedition, a volcano trek through the winding backcountry to Volcán Irazú, and stay overnight in a local community. Interact with local school children on cultural and language exchanges to discover more about the Costa Rican way of life. Continue on your way, and then feel an incredible sense of accomplishment as you complete your hike to the volcanic crater’s rim. Look out at the vast crater lake as you learn about the moonscape ash that blankets the volcano’s summit, atmospheric pressure at elevation, and how volcanoes shape the world we live in today.

Navigation Trek, Ziplining, Coffee & Butterfly Sanctuary

Head back to the rainforest base for a day filled with ziplining through the rainforest canopy and touring a local coffee plantation and butterfly sanctuary. Then, complete your final overnight expedition. Work together to navigate through river canyons and lookout points to a picturesque campsite. On your final day, leave base early and travel to one of the best rivers in Costa Rica for whitewater rafting. Enjoy the challenge of class II and III rapids as you paddle alongside your coursemates and new friends.

This course is the perfect mixture for Girl Scouts ages 13-18 interested in experiencing the culture and beauty of both the inland mountainous rainforest and white sandy beaches of Costa Rica.

Hear From the Alum

“As a mother of two daughters who have attended 4 trips with Outward Bound Costa Rica, I am so pleased with the program. My daughters attended destinations 10 years apart, yet they both had terrific experiences. Both girls came home from Rainforest River & Reef happy and with their souls filled with peace and love of nature. Both had time to think about things and their place in the world and came back home in a really great place.” -Sloane, GS Mother

“The most meaningful part of my course was pushing myself mentally to overcome physical and emotional obstacles.  This helped me to become a better person in the long run.” -Veronica K., Girl Scout Alum
