About the Trip

You’ll spend the week on alongside educators and researchers at Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory, the oldest fresh water field station in the United States. The lab serves as a base for more than 65 researchers from 12 agencies and academic institutions, all working year-round to solve the most pressing problems facing the Great Lakes. Through excursions, field study, lab work, and hands on activities, you’ll learn about freshwater ecosystems and experience the majestic beauty of the Great Lakes first hand!

Upon arrival in Northeast Ohio, we’ll arrange for travel by ferry to the Lake Erie Islands. Throughout your stay, you’ll explore South Bass Island, Kelleys Island, and Gibraltar Island. You’ll live in field station dormitories and enjoy meals in the field station cafeteria. Throughout the week, you’ll work alongside researchers learning about the chemical and physical characteristics of the lake, identifying fish, and collecting samples from shore and aboard research vessels. You’ll also have time for both educational and fun excursions including visits to neighboring islands, a behind the scenes tour of the local Aquatic Visitor Center, a tour of a fish hatchery, kayaking in the bay, and local tourist attractions. All of this plus Lake Erie sunsets, campfires and new friendships are sure to make this a unique and unforgettable experience!
