“The entire experience made me a new person with a fresh perspective on life. I learned so much about confidence, my Spanish skills and pushing my physical limits.” —Jamie W., Girl Scout, 2018

Love the ocean? Love adventure? Love the wind in your hair? Catching Waves is the surf adventure of a lifetime. Experience a variety of water and beach-based activities against the backdrop of tropical Costa Rica. Learn about surf dynamics and philosophy as well as about the unique coastal ecology of the country’s Pacific Coast.

Instructors will provide detailed and holistic instruction about how to read waves, tides, and currents. They will give group and personal instruction on surfing—from the first time you stand up on a board to when you catch your first wave.

While staying at your beach campsite, you will participate in service projects that will benefit the local community. The project will depend on the current needs of the region, but volunteer opportunities may include painting, recycling, teaching English, or environmental restoration projects. When not surfing or serving, you’ll also participate in fun beach activities like playing volleyball, soccer, doing yoga, and jewelry making.

After your surf and service phase, enjoy a day of whitewater rafting, ziplining on a rainforest canopy tour, and visiting the local artisan market in Costa Rica’s vibrant capital city of San Jose.

Since 2006, Outward Bound Costa Rica has inspired a lifetime of leadership, growth and a commitment to serve through our Girl Scout Destinations courses. Leadership and character development is woven into your adventures through discussions and nightly meetings after course activities. Discover how the challenges and lessons of the Costa Rican and Panamanian wilderness will help you thrive and triumph over challenges in your own life.

“My daughter’s trip to Costa Rica was her first adventure alone and internationally. She was also traveling with a major medical condition which made her (and mom!) much more anxious about her experience. The team at OBCR were phenomenal about going out of their way to make sure we had what we needed for her participation. She had great adventures. Experienced wonderful new things and will have stories to share for her lifetime. When can she go back?!” ~Sharon, GS Mother, 2017
