About the Trip

Surf the tropical waters of Costa Rica while giving back to a local community!

“This course was the adventure I’d been waiting for. It’s challenging, Outward Bound Costa Rica takes good care of you and you learn a lot about the country.”

-Elizabeth, 2016 Girl Scout

Catching Waves is the surf adventure of a lifetime! Experience a variety of water and beach-based activities against the backdrop of tropical Costa Rica. Learn about surf dynamics and philosophy as well as about the unique coastal ecology of the country’s Pacific Coast. Instructors will provide detailed and holistic instruction about how to read waves, tides, and currents. They will give group and personal instruction on surfing – from the first time you stand up on a board to when you catch your first wave.

While staying at your beach campsite, you will also participate in a service project that will benefit the local community. The project will depend on the current needs of the region, but activities may include painting, recycling, teaching English, or environmental restoration projects. When not surfing or volunteering, you’ll also participate in fun beach activities that may include playing volleyball, soccer, yoga, and jewelry making.

After your surf and service phase, enjoy adventure activities including a day of whitewater rafting, a day of zip lining on a rainforest canopy tour, and a visit to an artisan market in Costa Rica’s vibrant capital city of San Jose.

Since 2006, Outward Bound Costa Rica has been hosting Girl Scouts from across the nation, honing our approach to experiential education for these unique programs. Girl Scouts will be exposed to Outward Bound Costa Rica’s focus on both leadership and personal development throughout your adventure facilitated by discussions and meetings woven into all course activities. Explore how the challenges you meet in and out of the Costa Rican waves help you confront the challenges that life presents now and in the future.

“My 15-year old daughter told me this is the best trip she has ever been on. She made friends quickly with all the girls and said all the people were fantastic.”

-Rachel, 2016 Girl Scout Mom
