Girl Scouts 2013 National Young Women of Distinction: Kathy

When she arrived in the United States at age 12 from Honduras, Kathy couldn’t speak English, but books helped her learn. “Knowledge is power,” she says. For her Gold Award project, Kathy wanted to help other students in her community improve their English skills and do better in school, so she built a library at a local learning center. “I didn’t do my Gold Award for the scholarships,” Kathy says. “I was really just looking at the privilege to prove to myself that I could do something to help my community.”
