Exploring What Fascinates

Aug 20, 2012

Ever wonder how desert animals bathe and keep clean? How an earless lizard can escape a drought? Or which wild bird is the world’s oldest? Author Darcy Pattison wonders these things all the time, so she researches and writes picture books and novels about them.

That old bird Darcy wrote about? Her name is Wisdom, she’s a Midway Albatross, and has survived man-made disasters for 60 years, including the Japanese Tsunami, lead poisoning, and longline fishing. Even more amazing? Wisdom is still laying eggs and hatching chicks!

“I tell stories to connect a reader with something that interests me: something that fascinates me, something that makes me laugh, and something that makes me cry,” Darcy says. “Through the medium of words, I reach out to touch another person and say, ‘Hey, what do you think of this?’ ”
