March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate all the spirited, independent women who have made a significant difference in our world. You can find some of these on our Inspiring Women Timeline. They’re the real game changers for women everywhere, who we can thank for opening doors that were previously closed to females, and creating opportunities for generations to come.

Women like Grace Murray Hopper, who joined the Navy during World War II, and used her math and science skills to lay the foundation for the computer-programming language known as COBOL (short for Common Business Oriented Language). Or Amelia Earhart, not only the first woman to fly a plane across the Atlantic Ocean, but also the first woman to make that journey solo and nonstop. Amelia was motivated not by fame or thrill seeking, but rather by her ambition and love of flight, saying, “Please know that I am aware of the hazards. I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others.”

Then there is Chien-Shiung Wu, the “First Lady of Physics,” whose experiments radically changed the way scientists view the structure of our universe, and Geraldyn “Jerrie” Cobb, the first female military pilot to be trained as an astronaut.

Today, Girl Scouts like Hareem and Amanda, our “Dear Mr. President…” PSA Winners, encourage themselves and all girls to strive for success in every field. You can decide each and every day to honor the powerful and inspiring history of all women by accepting for yourself nothing less than success. Thanks to all the women who went before you, nothing can hold you back today!
